spring meeting - monday 15 may 2023 at long sutton golf club
The Long Sutton course looked perfect in the sunshine although there was a cold, blustery wind. The course was in excellent condition, but it is a long and challenging course, the Competition took an exhausting four and half hours. Well done to all of you for lasting the course.
Thank you to all those who played and a particular thank you to Taunton and Pickeridge and Wheathill members who made up the majority of the field. Sue Kinch and Cheryl Saunders of Worlebury playing off 31 and 26 came in with an amazing 41 points. Corinne Lyon and Theresa Dowsett of Taunton and Pickeridge took second place with 35 points having a better back 9 than Hazel Bevan and Sue Vowles of Burnham and Berrow who took third place. A close run competition for fourth place with four pairs making 31 points. With a better back nine by one point Anne Regler and Marion Underhill of Orchardleigh take fourth place. Jill Paul presented vouchers to the winners Cheryl and Sue, plus Corinne and Theresa for second place. Vouchers for third and fourth will be posted. Thank you to Paul and Rob (Starters), the cheerful bar staff and the caterers for some much needed sustenance after all that fresh air. The food was nicely presented and very tasty. Thank you to Caroline Lumley-Frank who oversaw the golf ball raffle which made a healthy £66 which goes into the kitty to help support future events. A special thank you to Melissa who multi tasked throughout the day and to Christine Turner, Long Sutton’s Lady Captain, who gave up her whole day to support with a variety of tasks. I hope both are able to rest today. Janet Handley |
spring meeting pairs better ball stableford 9 may 2022 at the mendip golf club |
We had a most successful and enjoyable day at The Mendip Golf Course for our first Competition of 2022. There was a lovely atmosphere in the Club House throughout the day.
Twenty four pairs played in almost perfect weather. There were places on the course where the wind did get quite strong and chilly at times, but everyone seemed to enjoy the course. Jill Carter and Janet Scilly (Bath) came first with an impressive score of 45. Jill achieved three holes at par and Janet two holes. Jill said she and her partner had blended well, one of them making 2 or 3 points on every hole. Andrea Jordan and Helen Wormald (Stockwood Vale) came second equal with Beverley Broad and Irene Dickinson (Enmore) both scoring an excellent 43. They were so well matched that counting had to go to the last six holes where Andrea and Helen won by 1 point. As these two pairs played alongside each other it must have been nail-biting for them. They teed off 50 minutes before the winners so were seeing themselves at the top of the leader board for quite a while with Kathy Lane and Sue Slade (Wells) in third place with 42 points at that point. So many TWOs on one day! Sue Bamping (Wheathill), Sandra Ford (Long Sutton) and Silvia Gibbon (Wells) got twos on the 12th whilst Heather Crump (Taunton & Pickeridge) achieved a two on the 18th. Well done ladies. Thank you to Stuart Disney and his team, Steve and his bar staff and Elaine Richardson, Mendip’s Delegate, for sorting out the food orders. Thanks also to Joan for volunteering as Starter. They all played a part in ensuring that the day ran smoothly. Many thanks also to all those ladies who took part in the Competition and your generosity with the Golf Ball Raffle which made a splendid £76. This money pays into the SCSLGA funds which helps to keep the costs down. |

2021 REPORT ON SPRING MEETING PAIRS BETTER BALL STABLEFORD - 3 august 2021 at brean golf club
Winners of the Pairs Better Ball Stableford
Beryl Richards and Linda Edmonson on the left of the picture with SCSLGA Captain, Jill Paul Usually played in May but postponed due to Covid-19, playing conditions at Brean were ideal. The course and the weather were perfect although it may have been too hot for one or two. All the players managed to achieve scores in the 30’s whilst the two winning pairs were able to achieve scores of 44 and 41.
Congratulations to Beryl Richards and Linda Edmondson the home team. They achieved the top score of 44. Diane achieved pars on seven holes and a birdie on the 10th whilst Linda played three pars, two of those being the par 5’s. It must have been quite intimidating for the pair playing alongside them. Well done to Diane Ramsay and Linda Wright from Wells coming in second with 41 points. They achieved 3 pars between them on the back nine. There was a tussle for third. Jill Paul and Marlene Ewens from Taunton and Pickeridge, and Fay Galley alongside Lesley Roebuck from Bath both coming in with 39 points. Jill and Marlene just tipped the balance in their favour by scoring 2 more points on the last three holes. Well done to both pairs. Interesting that Jill and Marlene played alongside the winners and Fay and Lesley alongside the pair that came second! The course was tricky, with quite a few potential water hazards but all commented on the excellent condition of the course. The Clubhouse itself is very impressive and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Trevor, the Club Chairman, acted as starter. Ben and his assistant provided a welcoming cup of tea or coffee and ensured the smooth running of the catering at the end of play in the Kingfisher Suite which overlooks most of the course. Beverley, one of the Brean Senior Ladies, ran the Golf Ball Raffle achieving a splendid £69. She later walked with Yvette and myself around the course so we were able to see for ourselves what beautiful condition the course was in and enjoy the views. Josh in the Pro Shop checked out the score cards as the players came in, kept the leader board updated and provided a printout of the results at the end. Andrew March ably assisted by his team provided us with a well organised and enjoyable day. Thank you to all of them. Brean is definitely a venue to consider for future events.
