SLCGA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY 5 MAY 2024 at MENDIP SPRING GOLF CLUB
20 players entered the Championship this year, but with one withdrawal, 19 entrants competed on the day.
Scott and his team were very welcoming for our most prestigious event of the year, the course presented in excellent condition despite a very wet Spring with a lot of standing water just days before. Thank you very much indeed to all at Mendip Spring who helped to make this day a great success.
The first round was played in relatively mild conditions, the rain just starting again towards the end, catching the final players. Morning scores were mixed on this course which knows how to lose balls in ditches and streams, but a gross 75 from Libbie Dezis on count back from Abigail Moore led the first round's play.
The second round was played mainly in the rain but the scores overall were lower than in round one. Abigail again led the way with a superb gross 71, closely followed by last year's champion Aimee Sawyer on 72. Abigail's excellent score also equalled the women's red tee course record.
So after round 2, Abigail was the winner of the Championship Cup with a combined gross 146, followed by Aimee on 149 and Jade Cope, a previous winner and runner-up, on 151.
There was an unfortunate IT glitch with the course not accurately uploaded to IG, showing hole 10 as a par 5 even thought it had been changed to a par 4 a couple of years ago. Consequently the playing handicaps were inaccurate, affecting the nett scores. We were unable to present any nett prizes on the day, but after updating the course & re-entering all scores, the nett results are now accurate and show on the link above.
Abigail won the Phillips trophy for the best nett with a score of 138, a remarkable 10 under her handicap, as well as the Gliddon Vase, best gross for under 25s, the Scratch Cup for the best gross 18 holes and of course the Championship Cup. What a day to remember Abigail!
As a player can win any number of trophies but only one voucher, the winners of the nett prize vouchers were 1st, Libbie Dezis, 2nd Lillianna Marshall and 3rd, Sarah Whittock.
There were a staggering 17 two's, a special mention going to Olivia Lake who scored an eagle two* on the 1st and ended her round with a two on the 18th - a great 'top and tail' for her round -
Kate Cleverley 2nd, Jade Cope 2nd x 2, Connie Cox 8th, Sara-Jane Cox-Conklin 2nd,
Olivia Lake 1st* & 18th, Lilianna Marshall 14th, Abigail Moore 6th, 8th, Megan Wilde 8th
Emelia Pearce 14th, Aimee Sawyer 8th, 14th x 2, Sienna Elliott 6th, Sarah Whittock 18th,

SLCGA COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP SUNDAY 7 MAY 2023 THE MENDIP GOLF CLUB
20 players gathered at The Mendip Golf Club for the 36 hole Championship.
The golf weather gods were on our side, dry and no fog!
Can I thank The Mendip for their hospitality, organisation, the members who gave up their time to staff the registration desk, act as spotters and generally assist in anyway required.
Thank you also to the Greens Staff who produced a very inviting looking course and as always, thank you to Janet, Alison and Jeanette for ref duties.
The first round produced some good scores, but well done Aimee with the lowest recorded gross score on the course of 73. Connie led the nett competition with a nett 70.
Round 2 didn’t disappoint, Connie followed up her round with an even better nett 68.
Harriet recorded the best R2 gross with a 76, but Aimee wasn’t ready to sacrifice her lead and carded a gross 77 to win by 1 shot.
There was some super golf on show, great friendships and rivalries on the course and a lovely atmosphere in the Clubhouse after.
Thank you to the supporters and the players for making this a fantastic day.
