2025 HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT BATH GOLF CLUB
It was a very blustery days and as I saw the greens staff ironing the greens first thing, I thought the conditions might be tricky...... and from the comments of the players as they handed their cards in, it seems my first thoughts were correct!
Of 90 players who entered the three competitors, 86 actually played. This is the busiest of all the competitions as we polish nine separate silver trophies for the three championships plus the three qualifying trophies and three additional trophies for specific handicap levels. Angela and I were surrounded by cards, coloured pens, stickers, glue and staples which looked more in keeping with a children's play areal but allowed us to keep track of who was competing for what!!
Bath Golf Club were excellent hosts for our day, with the course set up to challenge the best of players, helpers in the car parks directing visitors to the right place & starters announcing the competitors on the tee. The chefs put on some tasty specials for the day too so hopefully all entrants enjoyed good hospitality.
A big thank you to Janet Fear and Richard Dix for giving of their day to referee the competitions and ensure smooth play out on the course.
Scores were mixed, but not high due to the conditions. There were five 2s (and some 10s!)
Congratulations to Aimee Sawyer who won the Cairns Cup for best gross for the third year running - a superb achievement, and to Kerri Flynn for winning the best nett and Dickinson Cup. Nicola Diamond swept the board in the stableford with 1st place plus the Barlow Cup and Bridge Bowl for best stableford with playing handicap between 21-28. Denise Stone won the 9-hole stableford but was not a Grass Roots qualifier so Susie Howe won the Grass Roots Cup on her first time of entering a County competition.
Finally, Burnham & Berrow achieved the three lowest gross scores of any one club so the Executive Committee has nominated them to represent Somerset in the EG Club Champion of Champions in August 2026. Here's to their success.
Thank you to all who stayed for the presentations to congratulate the worthy winners. A full list of all the winners is at the top of this page.

2024 HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIPS HELD AT ISLE OF WEDMORE GOLF CLUB
The weather shone for the full field of 84 competitors who came to compete in a mixture of medals, stablefords and the 9-hole competition. This is the busiest of all the competitions that we run during the year, with a mass of silverware and vouchers available to those who can pull their best games out of the bag.
A huge thank you to Lyn Bird & Cathy Olive who were there to greet us at 8am and turned their hands to anything that needed doing during the day, from the welcome desk to starter duties, inputting scores .... and providing us with sweets to keep us going! Our thanks extend to all at Wedmore who helped us to host this event, from the office to catering, the professional shop and greens staff who provided a great clubhouse & course for us to enjoy.
We couldn't run these competitions without the expertise and guidance of our wonderful referees, so many thanks to Alison, Janet, James and Eileen for working in shifts to cover all parts of the course and the various queries.
There were some super scores ..... and some 'not quite so good' ones, as many came in saying they found it a tough course, so hats off to those who did so well. And 7 twos, Lesley Wills getting 2 of them!
Many stayed for the presentations so there was a good atmosphere in the clubhouse to cheer the winners. All are now e-Gift Cards from M&S as it is so much more efficient to email them. Winners (see link above) can expect them in the next couple of days.
Finally, Weston super Mare achieved the three lowest gross scores of any one club so the Executive Committee has nominated them to represent Somerset in the EG Club Champion of Champions next august. We wish them all the very best.
