Senior ladies' match v Wiltshire at Long Sutton
Blustery, unsettled weather greeted us at Long Sutton on 6 July. The ladies arrived looking smart in their uniforms. Thank you to Marilyn Kirby and Sylvie Coache-Tucker for stepping in at short notice.
It was very windy on the 1st tee as the 7 groups of ladies teed off. As time went on the wind dropped a bit but the rain came and then a deluge! It made conditions difficult and the greens began to flood. However, play was still possible and groups carried on until the end even if their match was over.
I was watching near the 9th for the groups to go through and the bunkers were well used! At the 18th there were 4 tense finishes.
Wiltshire brought a strong team and won 6 of the 7 matches with 1 halved (well done Jill B and Marilyn!). However, 3 matches were lost by only 1 hole.
One Somerset lady said coming off the Course “We had fun”! That's what it's all about, especially after the last 18 months.
A meal was enjoyed after the match and there was plenty of chatter.
Many improvements have been made at Long Sutton, both to the Course and the Clubhouse.
The Course was in good condition, despite the weather. There are more ditches (oh joy!) and the new pond swallowed up a number of balls. The halfway toilets are impressive!
Thank you to Long Sutton for hosting us. The staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly.
Thank you ladies for playing.
Match Report Somerset Ladies v Gloucestershire Vets Tuesday 29 June 2021 at Gloucester GC
A match at last! What a joy! It was an ideal golfing day; no wind, no rain and not too hot. All the ladies arrived on time from all parts of Somerset and met their partners and playing opponents.
A bacon bap was enjoyed before going out.
The course is an interesting one; one of 2 halves. Ditches and some water on the front 9, wonderful views, hills and a long walk on the back 9.
Sitting on the patio as ladies came in, I saw smiling faces from both teams.
There was feedback on the Course including that chipping was ok but putting not so easy (slow greens).
Food was enjoyed on the patio as groups came in . There was lots of chatter. What a treat!
The only downside was not being able to all be together for the meal but we're grateful for being able to play.
By the way, Somerset won by 5 matches to 2.
Thank you to all the Somerset ladies for playing and being so positive.
Thanks to our President, Yvette for playing and giving her support and to my Vice-Captain Chris (unable to play because of injury) for taking photos and selling Uniform.
Thanks to Megan, the Gloucestershire Vets Captain for organising the day and to Gloucester GC for making us feel welcome.
A good start to the season.
