SOUTHWEST SENIORS INTERCOUNTY GROSS TEAM MEDAL EVENT 2026
at BURNHAM & BERROW GOLF CLUB on TUESDAY 8 SEPTEMBER The day went very well once I realised all the markers had to go out. The first tee looked very smart and so did Liz as Starter in one of our team tops. The weather was kind regarding rain but wind got stronger as the day went on. The first six counties were round in good time and so kept the referees happy. The six at the back had a struggle as the wind got stronger. All were very happy to finish and competitively find out others scores. Amanda's early score in set the scene and others from Somerset came in to help, so congratulations to Somerset for winning the event with the top 4 combined score of 338, and to Amanda Mayne for the lowest gross score of 78. Well done to the runners-up, Gloucestershire, with a top 4 combined score of 343. Many thanks to Burnham & Berrow for their hospitality; for referees Dave, Tim & Alison; and to Liz Biddle for acting as Starter. Wiltshire were invited to announce next year’s venue at Wrag Barn . SOUTHWEST SENIORS INTERCOUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP 2025, held at FILTON on 20th August
This Championships is played between the six South West Counties, each taking their 4 best 50+ players available. The winning county is determined by the 3 best gross scores from the 4 players from each team. This year it was played at Filton Golf Club in Gloucestershire, a very dry sloping course covered in leaves. It was very tricky most shots going sideways down a slope. Our Team of Georgia Richards & Terina Parker from Taunton & Pickeridge, Sara Cox-Conklin from Burnham & Berrow and Kathryn Anthony from Bath, tried their very best but had little reward from the course or the weather, a chilly day with a stiff breeze. Wiltshire were the winners with a team score of 246, beating Dorset & Gloucestershire who both had 247, followed by Devon with 264, Cornwall 276 and Somerset with 279. This was a fair reflection of the average team Playing handicap - Dorset 3, Gloucestershire 3.5, Wiltshire 5.25, Devon 7.5, Cornwall 9.25 and Somerset 10. But the competition was well run and the players enjoyed the challenge. Wiltshire were thrilled, saying they never usually win anything. Janet Fear |
